Hey I think there was a national environment conference in 2001 or 2002, in Melbourne.

Inge Arnold went to the conference, and came back glowing with inspiration: the conference had been organised using the open spaces method -and Inge was soooo impressed so she taught us all about it- so that was the start of a spontaneous phase in the facilitation of SEAN (NSW student enviro activist network) gigs.
